Chi Kung (Qigong) is a form of exercise that has been practised in China for centuries to treat disease and to promote health. Chi (Qi)) means vital energy, the biological energy that is present in all living things and enters the body with each breath. Kung (Gong) is the term used to describe any activity or exercise that requires time and patience to master properly. So Chi Kung/Qigong means literally breathing exercise. It also means energy cultivation. The strengthening and cultivation of the Chi through the practice of Chi Kung can be a wonderful aid to well being.
There are many hundreds of types of Qigong and they are used for different purposes. There is Chi Kung for spiritual development, longevity, fitness, martial arts and healing. The aim of Chi Kung is to harmonise your mind and body through control and direction of your breathing, using the mind, or intention, to foster your vital energy.
Here is a calming exercise for you to try
Wild Crane Raises its Wings
Begin by standing with your feet shoulder width apart, toes pointing towards the front, tuck your pelvis under to smooth out the hollow in your lower back, relax your shoulders and keep your face to the front with the crown of your head towards the sky. You should feel relaxed, as though suspended from the heavens by a golden thread.
Keeping your shoulders relaxed, raise both your arms to about waist height at the sides of your body, simultaneously bend your knees slightly and breathe in. Then return your arms to your sides, straighten your legs and breathe out.
This simple exercise should be done slowly, in rhythm with your breathing, and in a smooth and graceful way, like a bird slowly flapping its wings. The concentration on the exercise is more important than the number of repetitions. Quality is more important than quantity.
For very best effect perform this exercise with bare feet, outdoors near to trees. Stop before you feel tired and rest, allowing the internal energy to naturally find its balance.
Don’t be misled by the simplicity of this exercise, Chi Kung is very powerful and effective.
